The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has urged motorists and other road users on the Benin-Auchi highway to avoid overload and speeding to reduce the rate of road fatality during the festive period.

Mr Moses Bature, the FRSC Auchi Unit Commander, made the call in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Auchi on Tuesday.

Bature said the Benin-Auchi road had witnessed series of unprecedented road traffic and accidents in recent times as a result of overload and speeding.

“We need to let the people know that overload is not acceptable because it has a lot of consequences.

“Issues of overload on the Benin-Auchi road will need to be tackled; if tackled, fatality being experienced on the road will be minimised,” he said.

Bature decried use of vehicles used for conveying both goods and passengers, saying that there should be distinctive policy for conveying of goods and commuting.

He said that the safety of travellers on Nigerian roads was central to the campaigns of the FRSC through its patrol activities and public enlightenment programmes.

The FRSC unit commander said that the command had embarked on a full-scale enforcement to curb dangerous driving, overtaking and use of phone while driving as well as speed limit violation and overloading.

He said officers of the command have been deployed to the highway for daily patrol to make enforcement in order to ensure that motorists comply with existing traffic rules.

Bature therefore advised motorists to always plan their journeys to reduce accidents, urging them to ensure that their vehicles were roadworthy before embarking on any trip. (NAN)
