Scientists have begun test-running a new wireless technology called Li-Fi, which is believed to be 100 times faster than the current Wi-Fi speeds obtainable.
Li-Fi was developed by Harald Haas from the University of Edinburgh, Scotland in 2011, and hit a speed of 224 gigabits per second when tested in the laboratory.
The mobile wireless system uses visible light communication (VLC) to transmit data at speeds fast enough to download 18 movies of 1.5 GB each second, Daily Mail reported.
The technology is being currently tested in offices and industrial environments in Tallinn, Estonia.
The new system is believed to be more secure than cellular Wi-Fi options because the light cannot pass through walls and suffers from less interference.
While the Li-Fi isn’t expected to root out the currently existing Wi-Fi infrastructure in years to come, the two can be used hand-in-hand to achieve speedy and more secure connection.
