Notable transfers that occurred on Deadline day

3 Min Read

Deadline day once again lived up to expectations with some surprise moves that were intriguing yet questionable. Some moves could not be completed before the window closed while some others were cancelled because the selling club couldn’t get the replacements they wanted. All in all, a lot of business occurred yesterday.

The biggest of them all was the move of Real Madrid playmaker Mesut Ozil who completed a move to Arsenal for a club record fee of £42.4 million. The Gunners also signed Palermo goalkeeper Emiliano Viviano on a season-long loan. The club also tried to sign Chelsea player Demba Ba but an agreement couldn’t be reached before 11pm.

Everton striker Victor Anichebe signed with West Brom for a fee of £6 million, the Nigerian International had falling down the pecking order with the arrival of Arouna Kone. Everton also confirmed the arrival of Chelsea youngster Romelu Lukaku on a season-long loan, a lot of us didn’t see this coming but the Europa League Champions can afford to do without him. Everton also secured the signing of Manchester City midfielder Gareth Barry on loan and James McCarthy for an undisclosed fee.

The second biggest deal of deadline day was the sale of Marouane Felliani from Everton to Manchester United for £27.5 million. The League Champions finally signed their man but all their other targets went up in smoke. United were unable to secure the services of Real Mardid defender Fabio Coentrao and failed to meet the 36 million euros release clause for Athletic Bilbao midfielder Ander Herrera. They also couldn’t come to an agreement for Leighton Baines, Everton simply wouldn’t let the England International go for a small fee.

West Brom also acquired Sunderland attacker Stephane Sessegnon for an undisclosed fee and sold Nigerian striker Peter Odemwinigie to Cardiff City for £2.25m. We hope Peter keeps his head down and gets back to doing what he does best, which is scoring goals, for Cardiff City.

Liverpool striker Fabio Borini and Napoli defender Andrea Dossena both made moves to sunderland on deadline day. Borini’s deal is a season-long loan while Dossena made a move to England for an undisclosed fee.
