Number of Migrants Worldwide hits 258 Million UN Reveal

The United Nations (UN) has revealed that the number of international migrants around the world has grown to 258 million and will only keep growing.

Most of these immigrants originate from India with 17 million whilst Mexico ranks second with 13 million of its nationals residing as immigrants elsewhere.

The Majority of the rest are Nationals of Russia, China, Bangladesh, Syria, Pakistan and Ukraine making up a significant part of the numbers namely between six and 11 million people from each of these countries.

According to a report by the UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs (DESA), the number of migrants increased by 49 per cent compared to 2000, while nearly 26 million migrants (10 per cent of the total number) are refugees. The largest number of international migrants, however, 49.8 million people (19%), inhabit the US

The numbers in Germany, Russia and Saudi Arabia amounts to 12 million people in each country, nine million migrants reside in the United Kingdom.

74% of all international migrants are between 20 and 64 years of age, compared to 57 per cent of the global population.

In 2017, 48.4 per cent of all international migrants were women, with the number of female migrants exceeding the number of male migrants in all regions except Africa and Asia.
