Argentina Drop Goalkeeper For Conceding Against Nigeria

Austin Marchesin, who was in goal for Argentina’s 4-2 loss to Nigeria in November 2017, has been dropped from the squad.

The CF America shotstopper was dropped for the 2-0 win over Italy and will miss out the mouthwatering clash against Spain today.

Coach Jorge Sampaoli called up three goalkeepers Sergio Romero (Manchester United), Wilfredo Caballero (Chelsea) and Nahuel Guzmán (Tigres UANL) for both friendlies.

Recall that the trio of Kelechi Iheanacho, Alex Iwobi and Brian Idowu had grabbed goals for Nigeria against the Albiceleste, which were missing talismanic forward Lionel Messi.

But the player who has come up for the greatest criticism for the loss is Marchesin, who defended himself by saying any other goalkeeper could have conceded those goals.

He said, “I am not stupid and I know that Nigeria’s match was not a normal game, but I know how the goals were, I do not think any other goalkeeper could stop those balls.”

Marchesin believes that he is fit and plays regularly enough for his club to make the World Cup team.

“It’ s my dream to play at the World Cup and I still do not consider myself off the list . I play every weekend ; I think I’ m doing things well to continue in the national team . I do not think that this match should be the only parameter to decide whether or not you can be in the Albiceleste,” he stated.
