Drake tops 2019 Billboard with 12 awards, breaks world record of highest wins

Canadian rapper, Drake took the centre stage at the 2019 Billboard Music Awards in Las Vegas on Wednesday night, winning the best artiste of the year and 11 other trophies.

Drake, who clinched the top artist award, beating Cardi B, Ariana Grande, Post Malone and Travis Scott, also earned himself a place in history for getting the highest wins ever. His 12 awards put his total at 27 to unseat Taylor Swift, who has 23 wins.

In his acceptance speech, Drake said: “I just want to thank my mom for her relentless effort in my life.

“I want to thank my mom for all the times you drove me to piano. All the times you drove me to basketball and hockey — that clearly didn’t work out. All the times you drove me to ‘Degrassi.’ No matter how long it took me to figure out what I wanted to do, you were always there to give me a ride, and now we’re on one hell of ride,” the rapper added. said.

In the top male artist category, Drake beat Post Malone, Travis Scott, Ed Sheeran and XXXTentacion.

He went ahead to sweep Top Hot 100 Artist, Top Billboard 200 Artist, Top Streaming Songs Artist, Top Song Sales Artist, and Top Radio Songs Artist.

Drake edged above Cardi B, who won the female rap section, to win the Top Rap Artiste. For “Scorpion,” his most recent album, he won both the Billboard Top 200 Album and Top Rap Album.

As many would have expected, “In My Feelings” won the Top Streaming Song (Video) for the year.
