Assassination: FG Charges Dino Melaye For Lying

The Federal Government has charged Senator Dino Melaye (APC – Kogi West) to court for giving false information about an April 2017 attempt on his life in order to frame the Chief of Staff to the Kogi State Governor, David Edward Onoja.

The Office of the Attorney General of the Federation filed the two-count charge on January 31 before the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory sitting in Maitama, The Nation reported.

In the case file marked CR/106/18, the senator is accused, in count one, of knowingly giving false information to the police in relation to the claim of attempt on his life in his Ayetoro-Gbede hometown to frame Onoja as the mastermind of the claimed assassination attempt.

According to the charge, the police discovered the falsehood during investigation of Melaye’s reported assassination attempt on his life by some individuals.

Melaye, in count two, was accused of making false statement of facts in a telephone conversation with Mr. Mohammed Abudu Abubakar, a son of the late former governor of Kogi State, Abubakar Audu, with the intention of harming the reputation of Onoja.

The senator reportedly told Abubakar how he framed Onoja in the assassination attempt.

He was said to have made the false statement to police on April 17 as the police launched an investigation into the assassination attempt.

The offences are punishable under sections 140 and 393 of the Penal Code Law, Cap. 89, Laws of Northern Nigeria, 1963.

No date has been fixed for commencement of trial.
