Clean up drains to check flooding, Enugu Govt. tells residents

As this year’s raining season approaches, the Enugu State Waste Management Authority (ESWAMA) on Monday urged residents to clean-up drainages in their neighbourhoods to avoid flooding.

The Managing Director of the authority, Mrs Amaka Anajemba, made the call in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Enugu.

Anajemba spoke against the back drop of the need to take precautionary measures before the rains.

“It is the civic responsibility of residents of the state to support our environment-friendly Gov. Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi to check all forms of flooding in the state.

“It is a known fact that the governor has opened up all natural water channels in Enugu and Nsukka metropolises as well as constructed and re-constructed drainage systems on roads in major towns.

“However, it lies on the residents to work on their neighbourhoods and ensure that silts and dirt do not block the small water channels that empty in the big drainage systems,’’ she said.

The managing director also lauded the residents for their participation in the February edition of the state’s monthly sanitation.

“We urge the residents to keep it up and continue to support government programmes and policies meant to better their lives.

“A good and healthy environment is the pride and benefit of all,’’ she said. (NAN)
