Corruption an evil pill – Efiong Spatts

Corruption is an integral part of a man’s life mostly on this side of the divide called Africa. It is endemic in churches, mosques, schools and every other facet of our society.

It is an evil pill that deters development and progress in the society. Lack of the fear of God and love for mankind are the reasons corruption thrives in our system.

Today, everyone seems to pay lip service to the fight against corruption without proffering lasting solution to the menace. One wonders where all these people were when a few of us were fighting the past administration? The President alone can’t do it.

Government needs to set examples with a few corrupt people to deter those who may want to engage in corrupt practices. Just like terrorism gave birth to Homeland Security in the US, corruption should give rise to the introduction of moral instructions as a compulsory part of school curriculum nationwide. The moral lessons should also be taught in churches and mosques.

This cannot happen until the President gives an order to the academia and religious leaders to meet and develop a strong lesson content that would be used by schools to educate the young ones who are the leaders of tomorrow.

When people learn about the evil of corruption and the stiff punishments stipulated for it, they will not only try to lead a decent life, they will also teach their children to shun corruption.

For this administration to achieve this, scapegoats from the past administration must face the wrath of the law so that history will bear witness to the fact that Nigeria is on the verge of recovering its image, which fraudulent leaders have bastardised over the years.

Corruption is an illness of the mind that needs systematic training to cure.
