Court Sentence Travel Agent To Six Months Behind Bars For N900,000 Theft

An Abuja Grade 1 Area Court has sentenced Mr Innocent Goodnews to six months’ imprisonment for defrauding a woman of the sum of N900,000 meant to secure a Kuwaiti visa for her.

The 37-year-old travel agent was convicted for cheating an offence contrary to Section 312 of the Penal Code.

The police prosecutor, Lukas Ephraim, told the court that one Okeukwe Beatrice of Kubwa village, on July 24, reported at Kubwa Police Station of how the accused, sometime in June, 2014, acted in a fraudulent manner.

He said he collected the sum of N900,000 from her with the pretext to secure a Kuwaiti visa for her, but instead dishonestly converted the money to his personal use.

When the charge was read to the accused, he pleaded guilty and was sentenced to six months’ imprisonment by the judge, Mohammed Marafa, with a fine option of N20,000.
He was also ordered to pay a compensation fee of N900,000.
