Panic as Gunshot at Murtala Muhammed Airport Injures two people

There were scenes of bedlam at the Murtala Mohammed Airport as a security agent accidentally discharged a bullet from his service weapon injuring himself and a woman in the process.

According to Sahara Reporters, the discharge occurred when the security agent was trying to remove the magazine of his gun, as it is standard procedure for air travel.

Panic ensued as people everywhere scattered seeking safety.

An eyewitness said, “It is a standard practice in air travel for anyone with a gun to pull out the bullet. This is what the security man was trying to do but incidentally the gun released the magazine which splattered and hit him and the woman on the leg as he bent down to pull out the magazine from the gun”.

Reports indicate that the injuries weren’t severe as those injured were able to walk to a car to take them to the hospital for treatment.

General Manager, Public Affairs of Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), Mr. Yakubu Dati, confirmed the incident and explained how it happened. He also assured travellers and Nigerians the the airports were safe and that in to recognition of incidents in other parts of the world, security at the airports had been better managed.
