Riots in Kano as Sanusi emerges Emir

1 Min Read

Chaos erupted in Kano yesterday even as the people still mourning the loss of the beloved former Emir Ado Bayero struggled to come to terms with the appointment of Mallam Lamido Sanusi as the new one.

Residents of the city marched on the Emir’s palace and Government House chanting ‘Ba muso, ba muso’’, which is Hausa for “we do not want, we do not want”.

The Emir’s first son Ado Bayero was hoped by many to emerge the first choice, and many of the rioters set ablaze tyres in protest of the decision made by the State Government.

The mob reportedly threw stones at passing vehicles, a situation which was brought under control with the quick arrival of a detachment of policemen, civil defence personnel and the state Hisbah.

Sanusi’s appointment, which was formally announced at the antechamber of the Kano Government House by Secretary to the State Government, Rabiu Suleiman Bichi, is meant to take immediate effect, while the date of his coronation would be announced later by the four Kingmakers.
