Samsung has entered a contract with the US Department of Defense to supply it with Android smartphones.
Soldiers will be equipped with handsets running a secure version of the Google operating system dubbed Knox in a move that sees the South Korean firm become only the second company to provide mobile phones for the US military.
BlackBerry was previously the only manufacturer whose smartphones were approved for use by the American Armed Forces.
“We are very pleased to announce that the US Department of Defense has approved Samsung Knox-enabled devices for use in DoD networks,” said Samsung head JK Shin.
“This approval enables other government agencies and regulated industries such as health care and financial services to adopt Samsung Galaxy smartphones and tablets.
“This is a significant milestone for Samsung as we work to grow our relationships within government and large corporate enterprises,” Shin added.
The Samsung Galaxy S4 will be the first handset to be adopted by the US military, with the company planning to bring Knox to more of its connected devices in the future.
