1998 champions France have knocked out 1938 champions Uruguay in the ongoing Russia 2018 FIFA World Cup to advance to the semi-finals of the tournament.

France qualified for the semi-finals for the first time since 2006 after beating Uruguay 2-0 with the help of an error by goalkeeper Fernando Muslera

Raphael Varane pushed France into a first-half lead from a free-kick that came straight off the training field, with Antoine Griezmann checking his run before delivering the perfect cross for the Real Madrid defender to take home.

Uruguay, almost struck back immediately from a free-kick of their own, but Lloris produced a brilliant diving stop to deny Martin Caceres, right before Diego Godin blasted the rebound over the goal post.

The second half started saw France resume control of possession, sealing their victory with a second goal.

Griezman let loose what seems to be a harmless shot from from the edge of the area but Muslera misjudged the flight of the ball, flapped at the shot, and saw it loop slowly over the line with a resigned look of defeat and horror.

Uruguay, with injured striker Edinson Cavani failing to even make the bench and cheered on by their fans threw bodies forward in the final stages of the match but could make no serious impact on the French goalie; Lloris.

At the sound of the final whistle Uruguay’s run of four successive world cup victories ended as well as their hopes of reaching the final in Moscow on 15 July. The french team has been improving with every match and are now seen as favourites alongside Brazil to lift the Trophy.

It is France who progress in the end and will either  face Brazil or Belgium in the semi-finals in St Petersburg on Tuesday. Those sides play their quarter-final later today (19:00 BST).
