Democratic Party candidate in the US presidential election, Joe Biden has emerged victorious, defeating incumbent President Donald Trump.
Biden, 77, becomes America’s 46th president.
Reacting after major news networks called the race, Biden said he was “honoured and humbled” to be elected president of the world’s most powerful nation.
The former vice president clinched the presidency after winning Pennsylvania with its 20 electoral votes Saturday morning.
He raked up 284 electoral votes, 14 above the 270 threshold required for victory.
Also, he received more than 73 million popular votes, the most for any presidential candidate in history.
Biden, who has more than 50 years public-life experience, twice ran unsuccessfully for the presidency.
He was the 47th vice president of the United States under Barack Obama from 2009 to 2017.
His election also marks the historic rise of Kamala Harris, who becomes the first woman and person of colour elected Vice President.
Speaking in a written address after the announcement by the networks, the president-elect said, “In the face of unprecedented obstacles, a record number of Americans voted. Proving once again, that democracy beats deep in the heart of America.”
He added, “With the campaign over, it’s time to put the anger and the harsh rhetoric behind us and come together as a nation.
