Apex Igbo sociocultural organisation, Ohanaeze Ndigbo has got a new President-General in Prof. George Obiozor to replace Chief John Nnia Nwodo.

Obiozor, who is a former Nigerian ambassador to the United States, Israel, and Cyprus, emerged in a delegates election held at the Dan Anyim stadium in Owerri, the Imo state capital, on Sunday.

He secured 304 votes to emerge victorious.

However, the election witnessed a massive boycott by other contestants for the position alongside their supporters.

A leading candidate for the position of Secretary-General of the organisation, Chief Chuks Ibegbu, also announced he was withdrawing from the race.

Ibegbu, who is an outgoing Deputy National Publicity Secretary, blamed his withdrawal on “faulty” electoral process and non-adherence to proper democratic rules of engagement.

“Following obvious distortion of the proper democratic rules of engagement and feeling the pulse of the Igbo Nation, I hereby exclude myself from the Nwodo led Ohanaeze election.

“Though I purchased the nomination form at an unacceptable sum of N300,000, regrettably the process was full of manipulation and the outcome would not be acceptable to Ndigbo,” Ibegbu said.
