“Abubakar promised to abandon Islam, convert to Christianity” – Divorce-seeking woman tells court

A 35-year-old housewife, Esther Hammed, on Tuesday, prayed an Ado-Ekiti Customary Court to end her eight-year-old marriage to husband, Abubakar, over religious difference and threat to life.
Hammad in her petition, also  is seeking the dissolution of the marriage on grounds of alleged unfaithfulness.
The petitioner,  who lives on No 52 Fajuyi St., in Ado-Ekiti, told the court that as a Christian, she made it clear to Abubakar   during courtship that she would not convert to Islam.
She said told the court that Abubakar also promised to abandon his own faith and start going to church.
” As soon as I got he become pregnant,my husband started withdrawing from going to church  with me.
”He also abandoned me in the hospital after I delivered through caeserian operation. He resurfaced three years later and threatened to take away our four- year old child,” she alleged.
Esther pleaded with the court  to dissolve the marriage and grant her custody of the child.
The respondent, Abubakar, 36, who resides at No 25,  Ereguru St., in Ado-Ekiti, admitted to the allegations, but pleaded with the court to save their marriage, saying he still loved his wife.
He however, urged the court to grant custody of their child to him in the event that the court fails to reconcile the matter.
The President of the Court, Mrs Olayinka Akomolede, adjourned the case until June 18 for judgment. (NAN)
