Aston Villa Shock Manchester City

3 Min Read

Manchester City missed a chance to go top of the League following a terrible defeat at Aston Villa.

Yaya Toure scored the opener gave City the lead but Karim El Ahmadi’s close range finish provided Villa with an equaliser. Edin  Dzeko restored City’s lead but Leandro Bacuna equalised again with a sublime free-kick and Andrea Weimann scored a late winner.

The win was Villa’s first win at home this season and  the home fans will especially be proud of the team’s second half performance thanks to the display of the Dutch midfielder Bacuna.

The Villa midfielder recorded a goal and an assist in the game.

City were hoping to go on a run after their victory over Manchester United last weekend, a third successive home win in the Premier League.

Manuel Pelligrini’s men have taken one point out of a possible six on the road this season, the team dominated the first half and looked likely to secure a win. Villa’s 3-5-2 formation left them fragile initially and City found adequate spaces to hurt them with Milner shooting wide while Samir Nasri’s deflected shot flew just wide of the post.

Joe Hart had little to do in the first half as Villa barely managed to threaten, the closest came from a 25-yeard free-kick from El Ahmadi which sailed over the bar.

Ciaran Clark;s goal-line clearance kept Villa in the game blocking a shot from Toure but the Ivorian was not to be denied soon after.

Nasri whipped a corner and the ball was headed away from goal, Toure’s determined volley gave City the lead. Villa were quick to level just five minutes into the second half, barcuna slipped a smart ball to send El Ahmadi clear and  he fired the ball past Hart.

City regained the lead minutes later when Dzeko’s powerful header went past Guzan.

Villa’s captain Ron Vlaar volleyed  a ball to the hands of Hart from Vincent Kompany’s poor clearance before the hosts were presented  an even better chance to equalise when they were awarded a 73rd minute free kick. They took advantage as Bacuna confidently stepped up to curl a mean effort that gave Hart no chance.

Villa got their winner when Kompany and Matija Nastasic allowed Guzan’s delivery to bounce and Weimann took full advantage, racing towards goal before placing the ball beyond Hart’s reach and gifting Villa a shock victory which takes Villa to ninth on the Premier League table.
