Workers in Benue on Sunday called on the state government to lift the embargo on employment and to pay workers all their outstanding salary arrears.
The workers made their demands through the Chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress(NLC) in the state, Godwin Anya.
The NLC boss spoke at the May Day rally in Makurdi.
He restated workers’ dedication to duty and hard work in the implementation of government policies and programmes.
Anya, however, urged government not to shy away from the issue of workers welfare which he said had been neglected.
He called on government to address the shortage of staff in the service by lifting the embargo on employment and to pay all salary arrears owed workers without further delay.
The NLC chairman also urged the state government to respect the financial autonomy of the judiciary as contained in the constitution of the country.
He also urged government to harmonise salaries of health workers on Consolidated Health Salaries Structure to remove disparity between workers in the State Ministry of Health and State Teaching Hospital.
The labour leader also demanded the payment of salaries to no fewer than 50 nurses and health workers employed into the state service since 2014 and to regularise salaries of Environmental Health Officers and technicians in the state.
Other demands of labour, he said, included implementation of 65 years retirement age for Non Academic Staff of tertiary institutions workers in line with the May 11, 2012 Act and implementation of 22 per cent weigh-In allowance for workers in state owned media houses.
Gov Samuel Ortom, represented by his deputy, Mr Benson Abounu, commended the workers for their patience and diligence and promised that all issued raised would be addressed.
