The senator representing Kaduna Central senatorial district, Sen. Shehu Sani, has mocked his political rival, Governor Nasir el-Rufai of Kaduna over his comment that any foreigner that attempts interfering in the 2019 general election in Nigeria will be taken out of the country in a body bag.

Appearing on a late-night programme on NTA network, El-Rufai said, “Those that are calling for anyone to come and intervene in Nigeria, we are waiting for the person to come and intervene. They would go back in body bags because nobody would come to Nigeria and tell us how to run our country. We have got that independence. We are trying to run our country as decently as possible. And we know the history of those countries that are trying to teach us these things. We have read their history. We also know their own stages of development. They went through these challenges. So, let us work together. Let’s advise one another. But don’t lecture us.”

El-Rufai later clarified the comment, saying it was not a call to violence against foreigners as being interpreted.

A statement by his media aide, Samuel Aruwan said, “Affirming that a country will defend itself against needless intervention is the kind of statement you expect to hear from a patriot. It is not a call for violence.”

But reacting, Shehu Sani via his verified Twitter handle, Sani said, “Threatening foreigners with Body Bags is not nationalism or patriotism, it’s fascism. They simply want to switch off the lights, close the windows and the doors and count our votes. They are watering the flowers of our democracy with kerosene.”

He added, “Body Bag in English language and not Sanskrit means Body Bag ,it’s not Backpack or Gucci Handbag or Louis Vuitton handbag. If you think Body Bag is a symbol of nationalism or patriotism, please add it to the coat of arms or your party logo.”
