Grammy-nominated Nigerian sensation, David Adeleke, popularly known as Davido, has welcomed the establishment of an African music category at the prestigious global music awards, expressing his belief that such recognition was long overdue. The Grammys introduced the new category, “Best African Music Performance,” for its 66th edition, with Davido, Burna Boy, Asake, Ayra Starr, Olamide, and South Africa’s Tyla and Musa Keys as the maiden nominees.
In a recent interview with Billboard’s Tetris Kelly at the Pre-Grammy show, Davido underscored the significance of the new category, emphasizing the importance of celebrating African music on a global platform. Despite earning three nominations for the upcoming Grammy Awards, the acclaimed artist emphasized that the recognition of African music should have transpired much earlier.
“I feel good being a nominee for the first time and getting three nominations. But the Best African Music Performance category feels long overdue for African music to be celebrated,” Davido expressed. He went on to cite legendary figures like Fela Kuti and King Sunny Ade, remarking that if there had been an African category years ago, numerous influential artists from previous generations would have had the opportunity to be recognized by the Grammys.
Davido’s sentiments shed light on the historical context of the music industry, emphasizing the contribution of African legends and the delayed acknowledgment of their impact on a global scale. He asserted, “Finally, at least it is happening now,” reflecting a sense of relief and optimism for the future recognition of African talent.
The much-anticipated Best African Music Performance award will be presented at the Grammy Award Premiere Ceremony, taking place at the Peacock Theatre in Los Angeles tonight.
