Disney Premieres “Iwájú,” a Futuristic Animated Series Set in Lagos, Nigeria

Walt Disney Animation Studios and Pan-African entertainment company Kugali celebrated the world premiere of their new series “Iwájú” at the Filmhouse Cinemas IMAX Lekki in Lagos yesterday. The series, launching today on Disney+ with all six episodes available to stream, takes viewers on a captivating journey through a futuristic Lagos, Nigeria.

The premiere event brought together the filmmakers, including director Olufikayo Ziki Adeola, production designer Hamid Ibrahim, cultural consultant Tolu Olowofoyeku, and composer Ré Olunuga, with special industry guests and celebrities. Additionally, several voice actors were present, including Ireti Doyle, Chioma “Chigul” Omeruah, Kehinde Bankole, Bisola Aiyeola, Femi Branch, Simisola Gbadamosi, Toyin Oshinaike, and Obi Maduegbuna.

“Iwájú” follows Tola, a young woman from the affluent island, and her best friend, Kole, a self-taught tech expert, as they navigate the complexities of their contrasting realities and uncover hidden secrets within their futuristic Lagos. The series boasts unique visuals and innovative technological advancements inspired by the vibrant spirit of Lagos.

Produced by Disney Animation’s Christina Chen and featuring a screenplay by Adeola and Halima Hudson, “Iwájú” boasts an impressive voice cast including Dayo Okeniyi, Shaffy Belo, and Weruche Opia alongside the talents present at the premiere.
