The Emir of Borgu has sacked five of his council members for letting Fulani herdsmen settle in the Emirate. His Royal Highness, Muhammed Haliru Dantoro sacked five prominent members of his Emirate Councillors for letting the herdsmen into the communities under their control.

The Private Secretary to the Emir, Abubakar Jibrin stated the charges against the sacked council members as he announced the sanctions on Sunday.

The statement issued by the Emirate stated that the actions of the suspended council members contravened the directives of the Traditional ruler of Borgu as well as the Government of Niger State.

The statement further explained that the decision to do away with the erring council members was taken during an emergency meeting held at the palace of the Emir in Gbemusu

Excerpts from the statement read;

“HRH announced the suspension of Wazirin Borgu, Ubandoman Borgu, Madakin Borgu, Garkuwan Borgu and Sadaukin Borgu with immediate effect. Furthermore, a five man committee has been constituted by the Emir to investigate the activities that led to issuance of letters and subsequent entry of some Fulani into Borgu Emirate.

The members include: Alh. Adamu Dodo (VC – Borgu Local Govt) as Chairman, Alh. Adamu Isah (Iyan Borgu), Mallam Saifullah Haruna, Mallam Abubakar Sadiq (Feby President) and Alh. Idris Isah (Danburam Borgu) as Secretary.”

The statement said further that the committee had just one week to submit its findings to the Emir who urged Borgu residents to remain law-abiding and peaceful.

The Emir further assured his people that he remained committed to securing their lives and properties without any form of compromise.

The Niger state House of Assembly had called on the executive arm to declare a state of emergency in the state following security lapses in several local government areas including Shiroro, Munya, Rafi, Paikoro, Borgu, Magama, Mariga and Kontangora back in February
