Everton Fans Unhappy With Iwobi’s Performance – Whelan

Ex Leeds United player, Noel Whelan, believes that Everton fans are unhappy with the performance of Alex Iwobi since he joined the club in 2019.

According to Whelan, Iwobi has disappointed in meeting expectations since joining Goodison Park from Arsenal for £28m last year.

A red card to Brazilian Richarlison in the Toffees’ 1-1 draw against Liverpool meant Iwobi was handed his first Premier League start of the campaign by manager Carlo Ancelotti in Everton’s 2-0 loss to Southampton on Sunday.

The 24-year-old, however, failed to impress and was replaced by Bernard at half-time.

Whelan says the midfielder must win back the fans’ confidence with better performances.

“I think we expected a lot more from him, from what we saw at Arsenal, with the big money that they paid for him,” Whelan told Football Insider.

“He’s not hit the heights that we expected. A lot of Everton fans who watched him are frustrated.

“This is an opportunity for him to go out there and show why they spent that money, show Ancelotti that he deserves a place in that starting line up, but he’s got big boots to fill.

“If he doesn’t come up with something special, he’ll find his bum back on the bench because he needs to score goals, he needs to show assists and he needs to show that intelligence on the ball.”
