We Cannot Afford to Pay the New Minimum Wage – Nigerian Governors

Immediate-past Governor of Zamfara State, Abdulaziz Yari has accused former President Olusegun Obasanjo of having an obsession for conferences.

He stated this while reacting to Obasanjo’s viral open letter released on Monday, July 15.

Obasanjo had in the letter called on President Muhammadu Buhari to call for a national conference to address the challenges confronting the nation.

But in a Friday statement signed by his media aide, Ibrahim Dosara, Yari said organising another national conference after failing to implement recommendations of the 2005 and 2014 conferences would amount to needless waste of the nation’s scarce resources.

He added that insecurity and terrorism which Obasanjo harped on in his letter were not issues unique to Nigeria, saying that the world has been battling with terrorism for over a decade.

Yari said, “In his letter, Obasanjo called for national conference. The former leader has been obsessed with conferences since the one he organised in 2005 to perpetuate himself in power through third term failed woefully.

“President Goodluck Jonathan also organised a conference purportedly to advance his ambition. Tax payers funds and quality time was wasted on the conferences but with nothing to show for it. Neither of the leaders implemented the reports of the conferences they organised.

“It is high time for all political leaders to eschew bitterness and avoid using our fellow citizens as guinea pigs in our ambitious political laboratories.

“Our security agencies should be supported and allow to perform their duties of maintenance of law and order without fear or favour, and without infecting ethic and sectional or religious venoms into their modus operandi.”
