The student hostel of the Government Senior Secondary School, Dawakin Kudu, Kano State was on Tuesday evening gutted by fire.
The fire which started around 05.46pm razed almost 70 percent of the Bayero hostel, which is the biggest in the the school.
It was gathered that the fire created panic within the school community as majority of the students were sleeping and others were in the class.
However, no life was lost in the fire.
A teacher who spoke to The Herald under condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak to the press said: “The fire started around 05.46pm and we did our best by calling the Fire Service who told us that they did not have fuel in their operational vehicles.
“Because of that, we had to mobilise the teachers and student and with the assistance of the good people of Dawaki Central we were able to bring it under control until the arrival of the men of the Fire Service.”
He lamented the inability of the Fire Service men to come to their aid immediately they were contacted.
Also, he decried the terrible state of electricity and infrastructural facility in the school and called on the state government to come to their rescue.
While the amount of property lost could not be ascertained as at the time of filing this report, the teacher said the problem of the school boils down to over-admittance of students in the current academic season.
“We over-admitted students this year, by almost 40 percent,” he disclosed.
He blamed the problem of over-admittance on influential people who usually unduly influence the process of admission by bringing their children and children of their friends and insisting they must be given admission.
The Herald recalls that Dawakin Kudu Science School was the fifth school in Kano gutted by fire in less than two months.
At Jogana Girls Secondary School, the worst hit of the schools, eight students lost their lives.
