Former Anambra State Official arraigned over N4.2 million fraud

A former speaker of Anambra State house of Assembly and former commissioner of Lands, Survey and Town Planning, Kanayo Chris Enemuo along with Alex Okafor have been arraigned before Justice I.N Owoibo of the Federal High Court in Awka, the Anambra state capital by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC.

The two were arraigned over a five count charge of alleged conspiracy and obtaining money to the tune of N4.2 million under false pretence.

The alleged offences which were in clear violation of section 8 (a) of the Advance Fee Fraud and Other Offences Related Act 2006.

The Former Anambra State Official had allegedly obtained the sum of four million two hundred and forty five thousand naira, (N4,245.000.00) under pretence that a property located at plot Os/9 Iyagu Housing Estate, belonged to him.

Further to this, Kanayo Chris Enemuo, had allegedly issued documents which were propurtedly from the ministry of lands, survey and Urban Planning to his victims, using his position to wipe away evidence of government documents used in obtaining the money under false pretence.

One of the counts to which both defendants pleaded not guilty read;
“That you, Barrister Kanayo Chris Enemuo, Alex Okafor sometime in February 2013 at Awka, Anambra state, within the jurisdiction of the Federal High Court of Nigeria with intent to defraud, obtained the sum of N4,000,000.00 (four million naira) from one Mr. Anthony Okonkwo when you sold to him a plot of land at plot Os/9 Iyagu Housing Estate, Awka, Anambra state under the false pretence that the said plot of land belongs to you, a pretence you knew to be false and thereby committed an offence contrary to section 1(a) the Advanced Fee Fraud and Other Related Offences Act 2006 and Punishable under section 1(3)of the same Act.”

The defense counsel applied for bail of his clients which the court granted and ordered they be remanded in the EFCC’s custody till the bail conditions were perfected.

With the accused pleading not guilty, the prosecution counsel, Barr. Simon M. Ibekute applied for a trial date and the court adjourned the case till 3rd and 4th May, 2016, for hearing.
