Fiscal Responsibility Commission (FRC) has warned contractors handling Federal Government projects nationwide, against the use of substandard materials.

The commission’s Acting Chairman, Mr Victor Muruako, gave the warning while inspecting some capital projects at the Federal Neuro Psychiatric Hospital in Benin on Friday.

Muruako said the commission, in collaboration with the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) had began a clamp down on contractors who either abandoned or executed federal projects with substandard materials.

The FRC boss, who expressed displeasure with the quality of work of the project at the Neuro Psychiatric Hospital, stressed that projects must be executed according to specifications for the good of the country.

He maintained that all the corrections and observations made by the monitoring team must be effected by the contractors in order to avoid possible embarrassment

According to him, the commission has a Memorandum Of Understanding (MoU) with the EFCC to deal decisively with any contractor who either abandons or executes substandard work.

“Capital projects must be executed in line with specifications; money released by federal government must be justified for the good of the citizenry.

“Contractors should take better steps to putting up their best, just as President Muhammadu Buhari is working round the clock to ensuring  better life for Nigerians,” he said.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the projects inspected include, the construction of two storey male ward building, two  kitchen and laundry apartment and clinical science buildings at the hospital’s permanent site.

Others were the occupational therapy building and hostels, finishing and equipping of the outpatient department .

The projects which were awarded six years ago, were due for completion between 2019 and 2020.

According to the Chief Medical Director of the hospital, Dr Sunday Olutu, When completed, the projects would ease the financial burden and reduce overhead cost of the hospital. (NAN)
