A shocking revelation has emerged about the number of lives lost to the recent pro-Biafra protests in some states of the South East and South South geo-political zones.
The South-East Based Coalition of Human Rights Organisations (SBCHROs) accused security forces in Nigeria of killing 80 members of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and their supporters between August 30, 2015 and February 9, 2016, Vanguard reports.
The group also said that at least 170 people were injured, while 400 have been arrested, charged or kept without trial in the period under review.
This report is coming at a time President Muhammadu Buhari reiterated his stance against the agitation for Biafra, in an interview with Qatar-based Al Jazeera while on a state visit to the oil-rich Middle Eastern nation last week.
He also said the agitators had no sense of history, as many of them were not likely born during the civil war in the country that cost at least two million lives.
The group said combined forces of army, police and navy killed 22 and maimed 30 IPOB members in the compound of the National High School in Aba, Abia state on February 9, 2016.
It said the bodies were dumped inside a burrow pit along Aba-Port Harcourt Road and vowed to produce video evidence to support its claim if requested.
In the same vein, the group noted that the army perpetrated 60 percent of the alleged total killings, the police 30 percent, and others including the navy 10 percent.
The allegations are contained in a letter to the Chief of Defence Staff, General Abayomi Olonishakin and Minister of Interior, Lt.-Gen. Abdulrahman Dambazau (rtd.).
