The Head of the Police Public Complaints Rapid Response Unit (PPCRRU), Abayomi Shogunle, has sparked arguments on social media after he said it was not a crime to have sex in a car in public.

The Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) made this known while responding to a question by a Twitter user identified as Stanley Moses.

Moses asked, “Oga Yomi Shogunle, please is it a crime to have sex in your car?

Although Shogunle replied in the negative, he however gave some conditions under which it might be a crime to do so.

These conditions, he said, were: if the location was a place of worship, if either of the parties was below 18 years, if the act was not consensual, or if both parties were of same sex.

Responding to the question, Shogunle said, “NO. Sex in a car in a public place is not a crime in Nigeria provided; 1. Location is not a place of worship 2. Parties are 18 yrs+ 3. The act is consensual (agreed to by parties) 4. Parties are of opposite sex. If threatened with an arrest over above, please contact Police Public Complaints Rapid Response Unit (PPCRRU).”

Nigerians have trailed Shogunle’s response, with commentators arguing either in favour or against the response.
