Unknown gunmen have shot dead the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Ward Chairman for Ife/Akpodim/Chokoneze Ward, Ezinihitte Mbaise council area of Imo State, Smith Chiedoziem Anyanwu.

Anyanwu was reportedly shot dead in the presence of his wife by two gunmen who stormed his home on a motorbike last Thursday, it was learnt.

On arrival, the gunmen were said to have met the victim’s wife and asked for her husband.

As soon as they sighted and identified him, the assailants were said to have fired several shots at him and left only when they confirmed he had taken his last breath.

Anyanwu’s death was said to have shaken both his community and the PDP family, especially after the party’s heavy loss in the November 11 gubernatorial election in the state.

Vanguard quoted an unnamed witness as saying that an unnamed party woman recently threatened to harm Anyanwu since after the last governorship election in the state.

PDP’s Director of New Media, Lancelot Obiaku confirmed the ward chairman’s killing but declined to give further details.

The Imo State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Henry Okoye, could not be reached for comments.
