A man claiming to be a member of staff of the University of Lagos (UNILAG) has been arraigned for defrauding a man of N200,000 under the guise of assisting him to secure admission into the school.

The suspect identified as Gbeminiyi Oke allegedly collected the said sum from one Reginald Mbanusi, claiming to be able to help him secure placement into the university’s Post Graduate Diploma in Economics programme.

Oke obviously did not make this happen as Mbanusi could not secure the admission as agreed even after parting with the money.

He however landed in trouble when he failed to refund the money, claiming that he already used the said amount to pay for an admission that Mbanusi did not secure.

An infuriated Mbanusi, sensing foul play, filed a report at the Area “D” Police Command, Mushin, Lagos, and the suspect was picked up for interrogation.

He was subsequently charged to court on charges bordering on criminal dishonesty and stealing, charges he pleaded not guilty to.

Magistrate O.A Adebayo of the Isolo Magistrates’ Court, before whom the culprit was charged, then proceeded to grant him bail to the tune of N100,000 with a surety in like sum.

She however ordered that he be remanded in prison custody pending the time the bail conditions are met.
