The Chief Executive Officer of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), retired Brigadier General Buba Marwa, has urged the new cadets not to get involved in drug abuse and drug trafficking in Nigeria.
Marwa made this statement at the 2023 passing-out parade of the newly-trained 2,500 cadets of the Senior Officers Basic Course 16 on Wednesday in Jos.
Marwa pleaded with the cadets and advised them to prepare their minds for the tasks ahead of them.
“The duties are such that there is no room for compromising the ethics of your profession or subverting the goals of the organization, as the agency wouldn’t tolerate sabotage from within,” he emphasized.
Marwa, represented by the agency’s Director of Planning, Research, and Statistics, Victoria Egbese, emphasized that they must ensure there is no drug abuse and smuggling of illicit substances within the country.
He lamented that over the last 30 years, there has been a high rate of drug abuse that has worsened Nigeria’s drug situation.
According to him, the passing-out parade is efficient in restructuring the agency and strengthening it to work against drug trafficking and illicit substances.
Marwa further stated that the officers had been trained to be good drug law enforcement agents and to be hardworking and disciplined.
“I do not doubt that they are aware of their position as an important cog in the law and order system of society,” he said.
Marwa appreciated the Plateau government for providing a conducive environment for the four-month training.
Earlier, Hon. Abass Agboworin, the Chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on Drugs and Narcotics, thanked the agency for working hard to end the acts of drug abuse and drug trafficking in Nigeria.
