President Bola Tinubu is currently meeting with the President of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Commission, Omar Touray, and former Head of State, Gen. Abdulsalami Abubakar (rtd) over the political impasse in Niger Republic.

Tinubu is the Chairman of the Authority of the Heads of State and Government of ECOWAS, which has raised a standby force to restore constitutional order in Niger following the ouster of President Mohamed Bazoum in a July 26 coup.

Abdulsalami leads an ECOWAS delegation which was in the Nigerien capital, Niamey, to interface with the military junta over the weekend.

Also in the delegation were the ECOWAS Commission president and the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Muhammadu Sa’ad Abubakar.

The delegation had met an emissary of the military junta after which it held a meeting with Bazoum, who has been under house arrest since his ouster.

Abdulsalami did not give details of Saturday’s meeting in Niamey to the media but said he would brief President Tinubu on the outcome.

The meeting being held at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, also has National Security Adviser (NSA), Nuhu Ribadu in attendance.
