The Network of National Human Rights Institutions in West Africa (NNHRI-WA) has re-elected Prof. Bem Angwe as president for a second time.

Angwe, who is the Executive Secretary of the National Human Rughts Commission (NHRC), was re-elected at the end of the network’s Annual General Assembly (AGA).

A statement by the Chief Press Officer of the commission, Fatimah Mohammed said the network at the AGA decried the recurrent cross-cutting and conflict-induced challenges in the region.

The assembly also expressed concerns at the violation of rights to free movement of persons and goods, impunity and denial of citizens rights by security agents and the denial of citizens rights to life, expression and economic empowerment.

The network said in the light of the above, members resolved to work more closely with UN human rights mechanisms to advance human rights in the region.

Members of the network noted that the challenge of ensuring the rights to participate in governance and low funding of constitutions among others combined to violate rights of the people in the region.
