A Federal High Court sitting in Osogbo, on Tuesday, turned down the bail application of Prof Richard Akindele, who is standing trial for demanding for sex from one of his female students, Monica Osagie in order to upgrade her scores.

The court rejected the bail application, which Akindele filed through his lawyer, Francis Omotoso, after counsel for the prosecuting party, the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), Kehinde Ayantoye, opposed the application.

In opposing Akindele’s bail application, the prosecutor filed a counter-affidavit, which was deposed to by a police detective, Afolabi Oluwatoyin.

At the resumed hearing of the sex for marks trial, the prosecutor told the court that although he had been served with Akindele’s bail application, he had already filed a counter-affidavit in opposition of bail for the accused.

Moving the bail application for his client, the defence counsel, Omotosho, urged Justice Onyetenu to admit the professor to bail in liberal terms.

The prosecutor however told the court that the accused might jump bail should it be granted to him stating that Prof. Akindele had refused to report to the ICPC office in Abuja, after he was granted an administrative bail to travel to America to attend to his health issues.

Prosecution further accused the suspect of being involved with child pornography as well as chanting incantation to stop his trial, all caught on tape.

Ruling on the bail application, Justice Onyetenu said the allegations raised in the counter-affidavit were weighty and directed the prosecutor to produce in court on the next hearing date, the tape in which Akindele was caught allegedly chanting incantations.

She ordered that Prof. Akindele be remanded in prison until the next trial date of December 17, 2018.
