Opposition Reject Presidential Gift

There seems to be some sort of cold war brewing in House of House of Representatives as yesterday members of the opposition spare headed by the Action Congress of Nigeria, ACN rejected gifts sent to them by President Goodluck Jonathan.

It was confirmed that the gifts, a six-yard local textile, were distributed yesterday through office of the first lady, Dame Patience in commemoration of the May 29 Democracy Day.

The opposition lawmakers especially from Lagos clearly told the contractor who undertook the distribution of the cloths yesterday that they were not in need of the gifts.

It was gathered that they got particularly upset when they saw the bold picture of President Goodluck Jonathan embossed on the cloths.

Many of them also reportedly chastised their aides who signed and collected the materials on their behalf.

They also complained that there was nothing for them to celebrate about Nigeria’s democracy especially under the current disposition.

However, the development was different from that of their colleagues from the PDP and other opposition parties like All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), Congress for Progressive Change (CPC), All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP) and Labour Party (LP).

Those in the Senate were also said to have accepted the gifts without rancour.
Meanwhile, efforts to speak with ACN’s leader in the House, Femi Gbajabiamila, failed as he was said to be absent from office.
