Pirates Rob Boat, Shoot Pregnant Woman

Armed gunmen on boats, who are suspected sea pirates, attacked a passenger boat, from Koluama shooting a pregnant woman and a youth.

Gulu Leghemo, the pregnant woman, was shot in the stomach.

PUNCH Metro sources reveal that the youth identified as Billy and Leghemo were rushed to a hospital in Koluama 2, in the Southern Ijaw Local Goverment Area of Bayelsa State.

The boat was said to be travelling from Koluama to Yenagoa, the state capital, when the pirates struck between Koluama 1 and 2 area of the waterways.

Lloyd Sese, the Chairman, of the Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria, Bayelsa State chapter, who verified the attack, stated that the pirates also stole a 200 horsepower engine boat belonging to one Sunday Leghemo as well as the belongings of the passengers.

“The passengers have been rescued and taken to Koluama 2.” he stated.

He, did however raise the alert that pirates blocked the Akassa route of the waterways in the early hours of Thursday, saying the development had prevented passengers from travelling to Yenagoa.

Mr. Asinim Butswat, the Police Public Relations Officer, Bayelsa State Command, when contacted said the command had yet to receive any report on the attack.
