President Bola Tinubu has announced a significant shift towards clean energy in Nigeria’s government sector. In a move to promote energy security, affordability, and environmental responsibility, the President has banned members of the Federal Executive Council (FEC) from purchasing petrol-dependent vehicles.
A statement released by the Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Chief Ajuri Ngelale, outlined the new directive. All government ministries, departments, and agencies (MDAs) are now mandated to procure compressed-natural-gas (CNG)-powered vehicles going forward.
President Tinubu emphasized the importance of this initiative, citing its alignment with his administration’s commitment to energy security, cost reduction, and a transition to cleaner energy sources. CNG vehicles are recognized for producing lower emissions compared to traditional petrol vehicles, while also offering a more cost-effective option for consumers.
Speaking to members of the FEC, President Tinubu underscored the unwavering nature of his administration’s energy reforms. He stressed the need for government officials to lead by example, driving the adoption of CNG technology nationwide.
“This nation will not progress forward if we continue to dance on the same spot,” President Tinubu stated. “We have the will to drive the implementation of CNG adoption across the country, and we must set the example as public officials in leading the way to that prosperous future that we are working to achieve for our people. It starts with us, and in seeing that we are serious, Nigerians will follow our lead.”
The President further directed the rejection of any proposals from FEC members seeking approval for the purchase of petrol-dependent vehicles. Instead, he urged them to prioritize procuring CNG-compliant vehicles, demonstrating a commitment to value-driven decision making.
