The Police Service Commission (PSC) has directed policemen still shirking their responsibilities to return to their duty posts or risk dismissal.

Spokesman of the commission, Ikechukwu Ani said this on Friday

The police force is said to be battling low morale among its men after 22 were killed as hoodlums hijacked peaceful #EndSARS protests across the country.

The PSC spokesman commiserated with the police force over the policemen’s killing.

Ani said that as human beings, policemen deserved to be protected and none of them deserves to be killed.

However, he said that it should not be used to justify the decision of some policemen to desert their duty posts.

The PSC spokesman reminded the policemen of the Public Service Rules prescribing dismissal as punishment for desertion of duty.

“The Nigeria Police Force is part of the public service and the public service is guided by the Public Service Rules. If you don’t come to work without permission, the punishment is dismissal if it is proven.

“The police as public servants are guided by the rules; so, they cannot on their own say they won’t go to work. Although, the Police Service Commission is also working to make sure they are protected because they are human beings; their lives also matter,” Ani told Saturday Punch.
