Premier League footballer Saido Berahino is to be interviewed by police after being arrested for drink-driving.

The West Brom and England international player was stopped for travelling at high speed on a car motorway in the early hours of the morning.

After officers spoke with the player, he was immediately arrested.

The 21-year-old was interviewed and is billed to return next month following his arrest near Lymm Cheshirelast month.

A spokeswoman for Cheshire Police said: “At around 03.39am on the morning of Wednesday 22nd October, a patrol stopped a car travelling at high speed southbound on the M6 near J20.

“A 21-year old man was arrested on suspicion of drink-driving, interviewed and was subsequently bailed and is due to appear at a Cheshire custody suite early in December.”

The arrest took place two days after West Brom’s 2-2 draw with Manchester United.

After the match he tweeted he was ‘gutted’ not to have won and the day after being stopped by police said he was in a good place.

Berahino escaped his war-torn African homeland of Burundi at the age of 10 to start a new life with his refugee mother in Birmingham and was called up to the England squad by Roy Hodgson earlier this month, but did not play.

The rising premier league star, said to earn around £14,000 a week, has also been touted as a £20 million target for Liverpool and Spurs.

He was picked for the England side against Slovenia in a Euro 2016 qualifier earlier this month, but remained on the bench as the home side saw off their opponents in a 3-1 victory under the arch at Wembley.
