The United States Government has called on its citizens in Nigeria to avoid crowded places in Lagos and Abuja, following last week’s violent protests by members of the Islamic Movement of Nigeria, popularly known as Shiites.

The US Embassy and Consulate in Nigeria, which issued the warning on Friday, noted that it has received reports that Shiites members are set to hold protests across the country, with tendencies to become violent.

The advisory read, “The US Mission in Nigeria advises US citizens that large demonstrations by protesters affiliated with the Islamic Movement of Nigeria are expected in the coming days throughout the country, including Abuja and Lagos.
