A tailor has committed suicide in Rivers State after his girlfriend broke up with him.
The incident reportedly occurred on Saturday night at Omuokiri Village, Aluu Community in Ikwerre Local Government Area of Rivers State.
Before the incident, the tailor’s girlfriend was said to have visited him in his apartment and threatened to break up with him over an undisclosed reason.
The Kogi indigene, who has not been named, reportedly pleaded with his girlfriend not to quit the relationship but she insisted and left.
The middle-aged tailor was said to have become despondent and proceeded to hang himself in his room.
A neighbour who spoke to the media on condition of anonymity said that the incident has caused commotion in the community as suicide is regarded as a taboo.
“The incident happened last night (Saturday). The young man was with his girlfriend in the room and they had a problem.
“The lady said she is no longer interested in the relationship. She packed her things and left the house. It was later that one of our neighbours found out that Tailor had hanged himself.
“As I speak to you now, there is trouble in the compound, because the people of Aluu said it is a taboo in their area. They have locked the gate and asked everybody to pack out till traditional cleaning is done in the compound,” Vanguard quoted the neighbour as saying.
