Things to consider before dating an older person

3 Min Read

Some girls, not just Nigerian girls oh– prefer dating men who are significantly older than they are. They may feel that men their age are too emotionally immature and they believe they would have more in common with someone older. If you’re a woman who wants to date a man many years your senior, well, you need to understand it comes with its cons too–read on.

They have a past

Older men are likely to have pasts, while some might have controversial pasts others might not. His past may include an ex-wife, children and grandchildren. Instead of taking you out during the weekend, he may have obligations with his children. If his children are older, they will likely judge you for being so much younger than their father. They may assume your relationship with him is only a fling or they would tag you ‘Gold digger’.

You both might not think on the same level

Obviously, he has lived longer than you, he has more life experience. He has already done his fair share of partying while you have barely started. Instead of going out to a bar or a club on Saturday night, he may prefer staying home and watching a movie. It may be frustrating to realize that he has zero interest in activities you find enjoyable.

You need to be serious

An older man may want a serious relationship. Because he has had a lot of time to see what’s out there, he may be ready to settle down with someone. Ask him in the beginning of the relationship if he’s looking to have a family. If the answer is yes, decide if this is something you truly want right now. If you are not ready for a serious commitment, don’t even bother starting  anything with him. Also, if you know you are also serious and you eventually want children but he’s content having already raised his, you might want to move on.

He is not your father

The older man you’re dating shouldn’t be a father figure for you. Don’t expect him to do things like your father will. If you just want someone like a father to be with, I suggest you put yourself up for adoption. This kind of relationship is not right for you.
