Police authorities have responded to an incident in which a Department of State Services (DSS) agent shot dead a man in Edo State recently.
In a viral video, some DSS agents armed with IWI Tavor NATO assault rifles can be seen rounding up some young men beside a road.
However, one of the young men attempted to run and was gunned down.
The incident has generated much debate on social media and in mainstream media in Edo, with many commentators erroneously identifying the operatives as policemen.
But in a terse clarification, the Police Public Complaints Rapid Response Unit (PCRRU) disclosed that the men were operatives of a “sister security agency”.
In the statement, the young men being rounded up were identified as “members of a violent kidnap for ransom syndicate”.
Read full statement, “It has been established that the armed men in the viral video are not officers of the Nigeria Police Force but operatives of a sister security agency.
“All the men rounded up in the video are members of a violent kidnap for ransom syndicate who were tracked down to the said location.
“Media stations in Edo state are currently giving the arrest a wide publicity.”
