A Nigerian woman has been sentenced to a 10-month stint in jail by a Katsina State Senior Magistrates’ Court for attempting to sell her 32-day-old twins for N350,000 in December last year.

Salima Lawal who hails from Marabar Kankara town in the Malumfashi Local Government Area of the state, has been given a chance to pay N10,000 fine instead.

In his judgment on Wednesday evening,Nuradeen El-Laden the presiding magistrate, on Wednesday said the sentence had been reduced due to the factors concerning the health of the twins and that of the mother.

El-Laden said that for the woman to have been trying to dispose of her kids she must have been battling abject poverty.

He mentioned that the guilty party and her twins had spent some days in the custody of the prison and that Lawal had shown considerate remorse for her action.

A woman who preferred to remain anonymous had offered to pay the fine on behalf of the convict.

The police arraigned Lawal for alleged violation of Section 278 of the Penal Code, which the magistrate frowned on, noting that the section dealt wit the intention to sell kids for prostitution.
