Fulani herdsmen have slaughtered six men who took meat suspected to have been stolen from them to the market to sell.

The Taraba State Police Command confirmed the killing of the six men following an attack on Iware Market by suspected herdsmen in Ardo-Kola Local Government Area of the state.

The State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), David Misal made the disclosure to journalists on Tuesday.

He said, “Information available to us indicates that the attackers killed the yet-to-be identified people because the cows they brought to the market were their cows, stolen during the crisis in Lau.

“We are yet to get the identity of those that were killed and I cannot confirm whether they are from Lau or not.

“We are still gathering intelligence on the attack to find out the perpetrators who took the law into their hands, instead of reporting to us, if really a case of cattle rustling was established.”

The remains of the victims have been deposited at the morgue of the Federal Medical Centre, Jalingo.

However, reports have indicated that five of the victims hailed from Mayo-Lope in Lau Local Government Area, where chaos ensued last week.

“They were trailed by their assailants all the way from Mayo-Lope to Iware, where they were hacked to death.

“The few security men in the market could not help them. The market was disrupted, as people ran for dear lives,” Vanguard quoted an undisclosed source as saying.

Recall that some armed suspected Fulani herdsmen attacked some villages in Lau on Wednesday, July 11, killing people and destroying properties.

No fewer than 42 persons were reported killed in attacks on 12 villages in Lau local government area, including Bujum,  Yilti,  Bunzung, Sabon Gida, Kwajafa,  Sobon Layi and Budon.

Other villages attacked included Bamga Dutse, Bawa Garki, Mayo-Lope and Kpanti Ladi.
