First Lady of Kaduna State, Hadiza Isma el-Rufai has appealed to her husband, Governor Nasir el-Rufai, to consider a woman for the vacant stool of Emir of Zazzau.

She made the appeal in a tweet on Friday.

Recall that the last Emir of Zazzau, Dr. Shehu Idris, died on Sunday, September 20.

The governor’s wife appealed for a female Emir in the mold of Queen Amina in the interest of gender equality.

Queen Amina was a Hausa warrior queen of the city-state Zazzau in present-day Zaria, Kaduna who lived between 1533 and 1610.

She was the daughter of King Nikatau, the 22nd ruler of Zazzau.

The First Lady tweeted:

Taking to Facebook on Thursday, the governor had said he was studying about the history of the Emirate to be able to make an informed choice about Idris’s successor.

El-Rufai wrote, “While awaiting the recommendations of the Zazzau Emirate kingmakers, I am re-reading Prof M G Smith’s authoritative epic on the selection of Zazzau Emirs from 1800 to 1950 to guide me in taking a decision. “Government in Zazzau” was published in 1960.
“The kingmakers recommend but ultimate responsibility to choose rests on my humble self. I must be as knowledgeable about the process as the aspirants and kingmakers.”
