There are now 15 million Nigerians on Facebook, the Menlo Park, California, US-based social networking site has revealed.

In the first official statistics about Facebook’s penetration into the country, the company said it reached the milestone on June 30, in a statement it released on Thursday.

The statement said all the people in Nigeria that accessed the site in the period under review did so from mobile devices.

According to Facebook, their study, which also measured the presence in Kenya, pegged the number of users in the East African country at 4.5 million, with 95 per cent of them accessing from mobile devices.

The number of South Africans using Facebook was 3 million shy of Nigeria’s Facebook population.

Furthermore, data from Facebook show that the active user population in Africa increased by 20 percent to 120 million in June from 100 million in September last year, most of them in North Africa.

Facebook established its first African office in Johannesburg, South Africa in June with Nunu Ntshingila as head.
