The comments of the British Prime Minister David Cameron on Nigeria and the level of corruption prevalent in the nation caused quite a stir among people flaring up debates on just how corrupt the country really is.

Many agreed with Cameron even if they didn’t like the way it was conveyed. Even President Buhari went on record to say the British PM was right and Nigeria was indeed corrupt.

Others have stated that Britain should remove the proverbial log in their eye before trying to remove the speck in someone else’s eye.

Nigeria may be fantastically corrupt, but just how corrupt is Britain?

Very corrupt if the words of Journalist and mafia expert Roberto Saviano can be believed. In fact according to him, Britain is actually the most corrupt country in the world.

Saviano has spent his life exposing the dealings of powerful mafia families and penned the best-selling exposés Gomorrah and ZeroZeroZero. The 36-year-old has even been living under police protection since publishing revelations about members of the Camorra, a powerful Neapolitan branch of the mafia, in 2006.

He made this declaration at the Hay Literary Festival where he came to speak. According to him, “If I asked you what is the most corrupt place on Earth you might tell me well it’s Afghanistan, maybe Greece, Nigeria, the South of Italy and I will tell you it’s the UK.

“It’s not the bureaucracy, it’s not the police, it’s not the politics but what is corrupt is the financial capital. 90 per cent of the owners of capital in London have their headquarters offshore.

“Jersey and the Cayman’s are the access gates to criminal capital in Europe and the UK is the country that allows it. That is why it is important why it is so crucial for me to be here today and to talk to you because I want to tell you , this is about you, this is about your life, this is about your government.”
